The I Me Mine Myself Virus

David prayed when he realized that God knew him better than anyone else. He prayed, “Search me, O God and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24).

We may need to read David’s word again once in a while as our own prayer to the Lord. Ask God to put our heart under His most powerful microscope and see if there are any sign of the I, me, mine, myself virus to be found. Then as we continue to read, be sensitive to the Lord’s direction. Surely, God wants us to be free of this virus, the self centeredness, self-absorption, and self-occupation that renders us useless to the Lord God, His Church, and those who need to come to know Him. Therefore, I believe the Spirit of God will speak to our heart as we read and will show us places where this deadly virus has already invaded our life.

If and when, once we know that we are infected. We may start seeing ourselves in the mirror with the evidence that our world revolves so consistently around the I, me, mine and myself or in a situation of “Mas magaling ang lolo ko” (my grandfather is better). By this, even if, we are up walking around and in good shape physically, but spiritually we become totally weak and incapacitated. When we live looking “in” instead of “out” on life, we fail to see the opportunities God sets before us to be useful worker in His vineyard and citizen of God’s Kingdom.

The Gift of Discerning Spirits

Spiritual gifts from God such as the gift of discernment or any other spiritual gift should not be to give us a more special or holier status than our brother or sister in Christ, but instead, to promote the common good for the entire body of Christ. If we think of it this way, “it should deter us from corrosive pride,” as we realize that each gift has a specific use, and one gift is not any better or inferior to any other.

The apostle Paul addressed this kind of virus in Philippians 2:3-7, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not everyman on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus; Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.”

Whew and Ngee! If this verse doesn’t describe us then we are truly infected with the virus. We need a virus shot, some potent portions of the Word of God, that will keep us healthy and virus free. (Inspired by David Jeremiah).
